The Living Trust of the late Sarah Winifred Day, Ed.D., of Morro Bay was created to leave bequests to benefit several libraries and other non-profits including the Morro Bay Library. At the time of her death in January 1999 a total of $211,305 was distributed for the benefit of the Morro Bay Library. Although the Trust was initially received by the San Luis Obispo County Library, it was transferred on July 17, 2001 to the Foundation for San Luis Obispo County Libraries where it is invested and growing today.
The Sarah Day Trust operates under the following principles:
- Monies may only be used to benefit the Morro Bay Library.
- Monies may only be used for books and media, with 25% of purchases to be spent on LGBT material which shows the positive side of the homosexual lifestyle.
“Sarah “Sandy” Day had been a supporter of the Morro Bay Library and Friends of the Library since the early 90’s when she retired to Morro Bay. Sandy knew all of the Library staff by first name and frequently shared her life stories. Her buoyant sense of humor was always present and her wisdom admired. As part of her legacy she also left a Charles R. Sligh Grandfather Clock which is housed in the Library. The spirit of generosity from Dr. Day has been appreciated for many years and her gift has enriched the resources of the Library to benefit the entire community. She was an inspiration to know and a wonderfully community-spirited woman.”
~Jude Sanner Long, retired Morro Bay Librarian
To date, over $32,000 dollars has been provided to the Morro Bay Library for purchase of books and media pursuant to the guidelines established by the fund.
